How to trim your eyebrows in 7 easy-to-follow steps (A simple, illustrated guide)

Trimming your eyebrows is an important part of facial hair grooming.

By taking care of your eyebrows, you are enhancing your overall facial expression and achieving a better look. A well-groomed eyebrow can make you look more attractive and presentable. All you need to get the perfect eyebrows shape is a pair of hair clippers and a few minutes of your time, once a month.

For the illustration we decided to use a pair of Wahl summerís deluxe grooming set. It has everything you will need to keep your eyebrows tidy and well maintained ñ comb, scissors, and hair trimmings cape. There are four different size attachments and a variety of mock combs to keep all facial hair styles neat and tidy.

Step 1

Grab a tee shirt and squint your eyes till you are blinded by the shirt. Now look at where the shirt touches the surface of your brows. That is where you need to keep your hair trimmed and groomed.

Trimming your eyebrows should be part of your regular grooming routine

Yup. A lot of men have bushy eyebrows that can cause a few issues, especially if you’re trying to keep a tidy look.

Most eyebrows need regular, maintenance grooming. So here are some tips, which will ensure that your brows look more groomed, and that you develop an even, and tidier look.

Find the right brow groomer to help you achieve the best results.

One of the best tools on the market is the Couture Brow Shaper and Trimmer. It’s precise, quick, and easy to use.

Decide on the thickness.

The higher up the brow is on the forehead, the shorter and less bushy they will be. If your brow is at a level where you have to reach to see them, then it probably is a good idea to trim them down a bit more.

Take care of stray hairs.

Most people have random hairs that spoil the line of the brow, or that create a bushy look. Get rid of them.

Create the right shape.

Imagine a straight line going down the face from the hairline. The tip of the brow should be slightly above the center of the line.

A great tool to use is the Graceful Eyebrow Shaper and Threader.

The general rules of the road for shaping your eyebrows

The goal in grooming eyebrow hair should be moderation. Don’t wax it all off, although there certainly are women who wear such a look well.

The best eyebrows are shaped for their face, and the most unflattering shape is an eyebrow which is too perfect — one in which the arch is too high, too arched, and too well defined. This tends to look like the person’s eyebrows have been drawn on, which can look unnatural, and can make the person look surprised with eyebrows that are too high.

Moderation means that your eyebrows should be shaped to look natural for your face.

That means there will be natural length and angles in the eyebrows, and the arch should be moderate.

Begin shaping, by deciding which eyebrow is going to have the most hair removed. Every eyebrow needs to be shaped, but you can choose, one to keep more natural, and fix the hair on the other one entirely.

Step 1 – Mark with Pencil

Either alone, or with the help of a friend, mark over the eyebrows with a pencil to decide the length and shape that you want to create.

Step 2 – Begin to Trim

Use a narrow-toothed comb to trim the eyebrows over mirrors. Start at the center of the brow and trim outward, to create the desired line.

Choosing your eyebrow trimming option

The first step to getting perfect eyebrows is to choose the right trimming option. Here are some of the popular tools and techniques used:

Tweezing: Using a tweezer to remove hairs one by one is the most common technique and probably one of the oldest. It’s also the simplest. Tweezers make it easy to eliminate individual strays without getting the shape right.

However, tweezing can be painful and take a lot of time. It’s also a little too… mechanical.

Hair clippers: Some men use hair clippers to trim their eyebrows. It’s a quick and easy way to take care of them in a hurry.

The plus side to using clippers is that it’s a more natural look, and hair tends to grow in a more uniform manner. The downside is that it will leave your eyebrows a bit thicker than you might like.

Trimming with scissors: To get the right shape, you will need to trim your eyebrows with some basic scissors. It takes a bit more time and effort than tweezers or clippers but this allows greater control of the shape. It will also give you a cleaner and more natural look.

Tool of choice: It’s really up to you to choose the trimming technique you feel most comfortable using.

Eyebrow tweezing

If you have been blessed with full, natural brows (like I am), then you can probably skip the tweezing part of my routine.

However, most people need to at least clean up the areas above and below their brows that are often covered up by hair.

I don’t recommend doing this everyday unless you have a very thin arch.

Instead, you can make eyebrows look fuller and thicker by following the guidelines below to tweeze about once a week.

Also, instead of plucking on the actual bones in the eyebrow area (which feels like eyeball pulling, yikes!!), pluck hair one to two millimeters away from the brow itself.

If you pluck too much or too often, the hair won’t grow back as strong, so just be patient and you should be tweezing for years to come.

Pluck about three millimeters below the eye and two millimeters above.

It is important to pull the hair out in the opposite direction to how it grows.

Trimming with scissors or a trimmer

This is the easiest way to get the job done. It’s somewhat of a messy job, so you’ll want to take care to minimize the mess as much as possible.

Start by grabbing a pair of grooming scissors or small enough to snip between each eyebrow hair.

You want to avoid cutting too much off at once, because that can lead to stubble. Tweeze only small amounts at a time. [1]

Towards and Away

Pull hairs towards the center of the brow to create more space. This area grows almost as quickly as you can pull it, so this is a great way to keep a clear brow.

Down and Up

Tweeze upwards. This will help to lift and thicken the brows.

Eyebrow Waxing

Eyebrow Waxing or threading is much safer and quicker for shaping and thinning your eyebrows. You can easily remove any excess or undesired hairs temporarily. But there are few things you’ll have to watch out for if you start using a wax pencil at home like:

  • It is important to choose the right pencil for your brows. This means pencils made of natural beeswax that are scented, colored, and tinted in different shades according to your preferred color.
  • The next point is to use proper amount of product, you don’t want your brows to be too dark or too thick.
  • Be careful while applying the product near the eyes. If you accidentally get any in your eye it can irritate it.
  • There are some redness and stinging on the skin after applying it. You may experience that. This can be relieved by applying petroleum jelly.
  • Be careful while drawing down the skin to create perfect sharp lines. You can easily make a mistake. This is why it is better to practice a few times to get the hang of it.

Here are 7 different steps by which you can easily learn how to do it:

Step 1: Take the pencil and start rubbing it over the skin to warm it up.

Eyebrow threading

Threading is an ancient Middle Eastern method of hair removal, which has recently become very popular in western countries. It was originally used in India and Arabia to create permanent markings on the face but has since evolved into a popular method of eyebrow shaping/thickening.

Threading is a much less expensive alternative to waxing and tweezing and can be done quite quickly, taking only a few minutes per eyebrow. Because it feels like less of a procedure than waxing, the eyebrow threading method is quite popular. If you’re not sure that you’re deft enough to tweeze or wax your brows, consider eyebrow threading as an alternative.

The technique behind eyebrow threading is actually quite similar to tweezing, the only major difference is that the thread is used instead of a pair of synthetic or metal tweezers. When you’re threading, you can feel along the hairs with the thread, using it as leverage to make sure that you’re grabbing all little hairs without over-plucking them. Even the hairs which feel stubbly can be magically removed. Also, unlike tweezing, you can keep your brows shaped with threading without worrying about over-plucking, because the thread guides you along the hair.

Some final thoughts on eyebrow grooming

If you have found this guide useful, then I would like to give you a few suggestions:

Again, if you are growing a beard, try making it your own by using the steps youve learned from this guide whenever you trim it down.

If you do have hair on your brows but want to groom them in order to better your appearance, then try to use some of the lessons in this guide to find a style that looks good on your face and body.

Choosing the best eyebrow shape

Other than hair loss, one of the first things men tend to notice about their face upon passing the age of 40 is getting that mysterious, thin loss of eyebrow hair. Luckily, it's much easier to correct than the loss of scalp hair.

Step 1: The first thing you need to think about at the beginning is your face shape. If you have an oval face, things tend to suit you well.

An oval face shape is characterized by a narrower forehead and a wider jaw than it is long.

It's a face without prominent cheekbones, a straight – or slightly rounded – jawline and rounded to sharp corners of the forehead.

If you have a round face, you should suit an arch-less eyebrow and look with a shorter length and a fuller shape.

A round face is not as wide as a square face but is much wider than a long face.

It is also a young looking face as it has a more pronounced chin than forehead. The hairline starts high up and is situated around the widest part of the face, in contrast to the horizontal hairline that finds its balance between the forehead and chin.

Step 2: Choose a shape that is defined and accentuates your eyebrows, instead of attempting to change the shape of your eyebrows to suit your face.

So, if you have a round face you don't want to go with an extra arched, straight line brow.

Oval face

An oval face is longer and skinnier than a round face. Eyebrows almost always look good on oval faces because they frame the face.

Step 1: The arch

The most defining feature of the oval face is the oval shape and the arch creates that shape. This is because the arch fills in below the brow in the center of the face. Start at the bottom of your nose to the center of your forehead and create an arch there.

Step 2: A fuller look

Fill in the area between the arch and the sideburns. You want to give yourself that fuller look to balance out the oval shape of the face.

Step 3: Fill it in

Filling the brow and the arch gives you the appearance of a fuller face. Fill in the arch with a darker color to add drama and a light color to simply fill it in so it isn’t as dramatic.

Step 4: Create a halo

Create a halo by lightly filling in the eyebrow. Use a color that is very close to your hair color, but lighter.

Step 5: Clean up edges

Use a brow brush to clean up the edges of your eyebrow.

Step 6: Hold it up

Hold the brush upside down and brush up to the desired length.

Step 7: Smooth it out

Round face

Square face, oval face, basically any face shape can benefit from a well-groomed eyebrow shape. Groomed eyebrows make a huge difference in facial shape.

{1}. Tweezers (or, to the ladies, some kind of tweezer substitute)
{2}. A brush with a short and straight handle, made of natural materials like bamboo
{3}. An eyebrow comb suitable for your hair type
{4}. A fine thread or staple
{5}. A small funnel/receptacle or other storage-type thing
{6}. Eyebrow plucking/shaping scissors
{7}. Protective eyewear

Square face

Whatever you do with the eyebrows, the square shape isn’t going to change, so keep that in mind. If you have thick eyebrows like Tom Cruise, that’s fine. His brows are nicely shaped and complementary to his face shape. However, if you have thinner eyebrows without a lot of hair, you’re going to need to build them with some eyebrow gel that gives them more body. This will ensure the brows remain thick and full, even on your square face shape.

Heart face

Forward to the mirror.<br>

Your heart should be facing forward when your face is in the direction of the mirror. If you cannot see yourself in the mirror, hold your hand infront of your face to touch the point where your nose and chin meet.

Your eyebrows should be at the same level as your eyes, or a little lower.

8 ways to make your eyebrows thicker

For many people, letting eyebrows grow into thicker versions of themselves is the best solution. It’s also the simplest since you will notice the difference immediately.

Carry a Bad Pencil

If you are packing a pencil, it’s pretty easy to sketch on a few lines. This will only work on clean brows though.

Tickle a Brush

Strong brows also feature a lot of spiky hair. There’s no avoiding that. If you want to soften the effect, carry an an eyeliner brush with you and gently flick some hairs up with it.

Call Them in for a Trim

If you want a slightly more radical change, you can bring them to the barber and ask them to skim everything off. Don’t ask for a shave though, or you’ll end up completely bald.

Tweeze Them

Some see it viewed through this lens: if you want your eyebrows to be more full in the front, then pull the hairs in the middle. A bit of pulling and you have a thicker line.

Avoid hair removal

For men, over-plucking may result in a thinning and bald area, especially when both eyebrows are plucked. This creates something called a “uni-brow”. While this look is fashionable among certain people, most guys don’t want or need it.

In this case, it is definitely better to let some of the hair grow back. To avoid bad grooming habits, it’s wise for men to take some time and learn a new technique for grooming eyebrows. This will allow you to maintain your style without making mistakes.

Here is how to maintain a good grooming habit:

  • How to groom eyebrow hair?
  • Do not pluck uni eyebrows

First off, avoid plucking both eyebrows. For most men, this will result in an over-plucked, thinned out and sometimes bald area. If you’ve been plucking your eyebrows before, it’s time to get a new habit. If you really want a single uni-brow, you can try plucking one brow at a time. It may still look a little weird, but it’s better than both.

Castor oil

Castor oil is an inexpensive, easy to find, and natural alternative to using tinted brow mascara. Just use one drop on each eyebrow after you’re done styling them and then brush them out. It’s gentle, smells pleasant, and will help your eyebrows grow stronger, longer, and sleeker.

Coconut oil

Helps you get bolder looks in just a few days. But if you want just a natural, more polished, brow and not a drama queen brow, try this folded technique.

Step 1: With a flat brush, apply a tinted eyebrow gel over your natural brow and brush it through. Start filling in the tail of your brow, creating a rocker-chic look.

Step 2: In order to create a natural, soft, and contemporary brow, smudge the pencil into the pencil.

Step 3: With a brow gel, keep the eyebrow in place.

Step 4: Go over the brow, and keep it in place with a clear brow gel.

Step 5: Go over the ridges of your brow with a clear brow gel.

Step 6: Shine a clear illuminator over the brow.

Step 7: Keep in place with a clear brow gel.

Repeat when necessary, and never use waterproof products on brows. They dry and make the hair go flaky.

Olive oil

Will condition your eyebrows. Olive oil is used to prevent hair loss and to strengthen your arm. Using olive oil for eyebrows will prevent your hairs from falling out, and it will also get rid of the dry, dead skin cells on the surface of the eyebrow. Furthermore, olive oil has antioxidant compounds in it that prevent free radical damage. Rub olive oil into your eyebrows and leave it in your eyebrows for a minute before washing it off.

Vitamin E oil will condition your eyebrows. Vitamin E is an essential nutrient that we all need in our diets. Using it for eyebrows will give your eyebrows a boost of health, plus it will also make your eyebrow hairs grow back quicker. Add a few drops of vitamin E oil to a cotton swab and massage it into your eyebrows at night before going to sleep.

Tea tree oil will condition your eyebrows. Tea tree oil is every part of pure nature. It has natural anti-aging properties, which means that it will stop the aging process of your eyebrows as well. It works as an antioxidant, which will fix any eyebrow damage that has occurred. Massage a few drops of tea tree oil into your eyebrows that are feeling particularly flaky and itchy.

Vitamin E oil

If you have ever tried to grow your eyebrows back, you will have been warned that you should not pull on the hair follicle or use tweezers for it will result in eyebrows that grow back thin and patchy.

Plucking the eyebrows can cause damage to them. With age, the hair will grow back softer and weaker and you will not have the same high brow as you once did. To prepare your eyebrows for this, you can start by massaging Vitamin E oil into your eyebrows to give them more strength before plucking. Vitamin E oil will strengthen the hair and make it easier to pluck. It is best to begin your eyebrows at the nose and tweeze from the bottom end up so you are not removing any hair from the top of the eyebrow that it needs.

Lemon juice

If you want to have sleek and well-shaped eyebrows, using lemon juice is a great idea. The juice is usually very strong so you don’t need to use a lot. After you apply it, let it dry and as it dries, your eyebrows are going to look better and better.

You can use a clean cotton ball and just apply the lemon juice to the eyebrows. You may also use a Q-tip or a cotton swab. The juice is going to make your eyebrows lighter and it is going to make them trimmed and shaped well. You will not need a beauty salon anymore.

If you use a cotton ball, you can start with the inner side of the eyebrows and slowly, move towards the brow bone. The way you apply the lemon juice is very important because it is going to determine whether it is going to be very strong or not. If you want it to be strong, you will need to apply the juice directly to the eyebrows. If you don’t want to make them lighter, you can mix the juice with olive oil and put it on the eyebrows. The result is going to be the same, just a bit less strong.

The goal is to make your eyebrows look like they are filled in and make them stand out.

Onion juice

To Remove Unwanted Hair!

Apologies for the scream. Let me qualify this. Yes, I use onion juice. When I discover little stray hairs coming through the skin on my face, I use onion juice.

I don’t want to ever turn my face into cheese, but sometimes I get a hair right above my eyebrows that grows through and turns into a small weed.

So when I’m looking for a quick fix, I use the juice from an onion. Let the juice dry completely before going about your day.

Clear honey is a fabulous natural antiseptic, so leave the juice to dry after applying and then apply some honey for that extra kick.

Hair growth products

Clippers, and shavers are all great ways to groom the eyebrows. It will make the whole process easier.

Some men’s eyebrows grow farther than others. To achieve clean lines around the eyes, you will want to keep up on grooming your brows.

Guys with bushy eyebrows have a natural tendency to over trim and shave off more than they need to.

This leads to patchy areas and the dreaded unibrow look.

For some men, this may be a vanity issue, but for others it is a matter of their eyebrows being too far apart. Quite often, the hair will grow faster on one side than the other.

You want to keep the hair between your eyebrows and not grow it.

Conclusion

“Beauty is only pimples deep.” This is something I have always told my little sister. Just because one of your friends has perfect hair, perfect skin, and beautiful, thick brows does not mean you are necessarily less attractive.

I have a few friends who are very beautiful, but their eyebrows are thin and barely noticeable. To me, this would not make me feel uncomfortable around the girl. However, I know my sister would probably be walking on eggshells around this girl because her self-esteem would be so low.

The best way to deal with this is to keep trying until you are comfortable with the way your eyebrows look. I personally feel that over-plucking one’s eyebrows is a bad idea, but if you are in dire need of thinning your eyebrows, there are ways to achieve this.

Brows have the end goal of making your face look prettier, not just enhancing your eyebrows. The easiest way to do this is by filling in your eyebrows with a cream or powder that is match your hair and skin tone. This will give the illusion that you are naturally gifted with amazing eyebrows.
